Audience Research- Primary Research Analysis/ feedback

The feedback that I got from my Primary Research survey shows that about half of the respondents did know about Waltham Forest makers and half did not about the makers of Waltham Forest. The half that did know about the Waltham Forest Makers know more about contemporary things than historical. This makes me really think about how I am going to educate my target audience and I am starting to question whether quotes would be enough or whether I would need some information about Waltham Forest makers history. I am also considering how to incorporate the information into my project product.

In terms of which cultures had influenced Waltham Forest as a community the vast majority said the Asian culture had a big influence on the community. One specifically said South East Asia for example China/Japan. This already links with the idea that I had for the William Morris inspired photo because William Morris uses a lot of flowers in his work and he is heavily influenced by nature - particularly birds and so is Chinese and Japanese art and ceramics. This leads me to say that I have to do more secondary research on the Chinese and Japanese art and ceramics and see if I can incorporate those ideas into my final product.

Another comment was about how Waltham Forest makers added western styles to traditional Asian styles. It makes me think about how - if I was going to create pictures using western styles and traditional styles I would have to really think about how to show this within a picture and maybe talk to people about how I could merge the two styles together successfully.

There was one answer  which said that the Arts and Crafts movement that William Morris created had as much influence as those who are bringing their culture tradition to Arts and Crafts of Waltham Forest. However from my research - the vast majority of answers seemed to show that they think that cultural makers have more influence now and therefore many people are forgetting about where it originated from and one of the key figures.

I asked about  the products that have influenced Waltham Forest and a quarter of them said the ceramics. This fits in with an idea I have had regarding ceramics. However I was pleasantly surprised as I thought that many people would talk about the clothes, Art , food etc. The fact that they have just said ceramics narrows  the potential ideas that I had before I had the results. This is a good thing as I am starting to picture the layout of my magazine spread and that also helps with the information that I might include alongside the quotes. This is also telling me that I need to be informative and be wary of the length.

When I asked ‘Do you think that makers being from different cultures plays a role in Waltham Forest coming together as a community?’ everyone said that it shows equality and diversity. One response that I particularly liked said having such a wide multicultural society and making something that shows that displays that you have a wide understanding and that you are open minded. I liked this because this is the message that I am trying to convey through my magazine spread but also educating my target audience on where it all came from because William Morris who is a well known Waltham Forest maker from history, took inspiration from others and that is what we are doing today.
I asked about which product they thought represents Waltham Forest the most and I was surprised that they said architecture as they had focused on Asian culture which doesn’t seem to lead to architecture. I expected clothing.  But architecture links with the idea that I have for the William Morris inspired photo shoot that I am going to do. William Morris influenced a lot of architecture.

From this research I managed to recruit some models and a focus group.
